Dakotah Norton was out of luck in today’s final in Fort William! He snapped his chain during his forceful take-off from the start gates and had to cruise to the finish area, where thousands of amazing fans welcomed him.
Dakotah is no stranger to riding without a chain, since that is part of his winter training routine which helps him find the best ways to maintain momentum down the hill. His final run in Fort William turned out to be the ultimate test of his skills.
“All in all, not a bad day, all things considered. We could have had a much worse result. I’m happy to have collected myself after snapping the chain out of the gate and then still putting a run together that I’m proud of. Small mistakes happen here and there, but you really have to do everything possible to hold onto momentum without a chain,” said Dakotah after the end of the race while waiting in the anti-doping control paddock. In this kind of situation, this was the perfect place to vent, calm down, and refocus.
With the 8th best time in the qualifications, we all looked modestly to being in the top-ten; Dakotah more than everybody else. He’s fast, he’s skilled and knows what it takes to get onto the podium. At Lošinj, he also proved he has the guts to let it go where it counts the most. Unfortunately, he didn’t have the chance to show that in Scotland.
There were a lot of positives looking at the weekend as a whole. Dakotah Norton: “I ended up in 31st, which would have been an amazing result for me last year. I’m still happy with how far I’ve progressed... And to get the same time as in qualifying, but without a chain, was pretty cool. I’m in 9th overall and I’m exiting without being in a much worse spot. I’m excited to head to Leogang with a one digit rank.”
That’s it—31st on the race, 9th overall. See you in Leogang in a week’s time!
